Coffee releases stored fat

Without releasing and burning stored fat, the effect of coffee on increased caloric expenditure will not reduce weight. There are two ways coffee acts.

1. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system - Acting on the sympathetic nervous system to release adrenaline, coffee acts on nerve cells to increase the frequency of fire. This also accelerates nerve transmission, leading to stronger muscle action.

2. Caffeine produces more epinephrine - Stimulating the adrenal glands to generate more adrenaline, a flight or fighting hormone necessary for stress response, coffee signals fat cells and causes them to release fatty acids. These are burned for the body's energy needs.

Coffee increases metabolic rate

The number of calories your body burns at rest increases with coffee intake. It also depends on lean muscle mass and other factors. Coffee can increase your metabolic rate even if you do absolutely no extra physical activity.

A 1995 report in The Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism by Koot and its co-authors examined the effects of coffee consumption on a subject's metabolic rate.

When people drank coffee enhanced with 200 mg of caffeine, the metabolic rate increased by 3-11%. Most of this thrust came from oxidation of fats in the blood.

Another paper in the American Journal Of Physiology studied differences in metabolism between men of different ages. They found that all men experienced similar thermogenic outputs after drinking coffee. Younger men released more free fatty acids that led to higher metabolism.

Coffee improves physical performance

Increased physical performance can occur indirectly when increasing metabolism. With weight training your body becomes more efficient at burning fat as fuel. This helps eliminate excess fat and makes you run more efficiently.

This is why athletes supplement their workouts with caffeine (or drink black coffee). Coffee favorably affects the speed of metabolism. It allows you to burn more calories even when you are resting without physical activity.

Coffee also increases thermogenesis by releasing more heat and burning fat to generate it. Black coffee is the best since it will not water down the fat-free effects of insulin.
